Why do bees hum???          Because they don't know the words!

  Invitations

  Foods - Drinks & Desserts

  • English Muffin Pizza - let the children create flower designs on their pizza.  (cut pepperoni into flower shapes, provide small bowls of chopped red/green/yellow peppers)
  • Cut up veggie tray with ranch dressing
  • Ants on a Log
  • Bird's Nest - This is a nice treat that the children can even put together by themselves.
  • Sunflower cake - Place a single round cake in the center of a large tray.  Extend 12 twinkies out from the round cake (for petals on the flower).  Frost the entire cake yellow.  Cover the round cake with chocolate chips.
  • Ladybug cake from family.com
  • Kellogg's® Rice Krispies Treats® Butterflies
  • Ladybug cups from Keebler

  Decorations

  • For place markers at the table - use the flower top pattern with bright colors of fun foam.  Fill a cleaned out .5 liter plastic bottle with water and 1-2 drops of green food coloring.  Place the flower top over the open neck of the bottle, then tightly screw on the bottle lid.  Later on, children can decorate their flowers with glitter paints and markers. (These can also be used for the Flower Toss game below).
  • Make Flower Placemats.

  Activities

  • Movies - A Bug's Life or Antz.
  • Read the story The Very Hungary Caterpillar.
  • Pin the bee on the flower.  Using a large brown grocery bag or poster board, draw a large flower (a daisy shape is easy to do).  Print out and cut apart the bees (12 will print per page).  Attach tape to the back of each bee, so that there is a sticky side out.  Blindfold each child when it is their turn. Who ever can place their bee closest to the center of the flower wins.
  • Flower Toss - Cut several flower tops out of different bright colors of fun foam.  Cut out center circle.  Clean an empty .5 liter clear plastic pop bottle, and remove any labels.  Fill bottle with water and 1-2 drops of green food coloring.  Place the flower top over the open neck of the bottle, then tightly screw on the bottle lid.  Use large plastic food container lids with the center cut out to throw over the flowers.  Who ever can circle the most flowers is the winner.
  • Make a Dragonfly balloon sculpture for each guest.
  • Busy Bees - Paint several cotton balls yellow using either a yellow marker or paint.  Allow them to dry.  On each cotton ball, glue on wiggle eyes, and with a black marker, draw 2 black stripes.  At the party, line up several sized clay or plastic pots, with small candies in each.  Allow each child 3 to 5 tries to get the 'bee' into the flower pot. If a bee lands in a pot, the child can select a treat from that pot.
  • Plant the Seed - Using large seeds (sunflower, green been) or beans (navy beans), give each child 10 seeds, have them take turns standing in front of a cleaned out gallon plastic milk jug.  Who ever can drop the most seeds into the milk jug is the winner.
  • Watering can race – Use 2 small plastic watering cans. Divide children up into two teams. Have each team race 20 feet to an empty washtub and fill with water, return empty watering can to the next one in line. They must then refill it from a clean trashcan filled with water. The team that is able to fill the washtub up first wins. You may use other types of containers found around the house.
  • Party Walk - In the driveway, draw a large circle, along the border of the circle, draw 15-20 circles (about 2 ft in diameter).  In each of the circles write the name of a flower.  Write each of these flower names on a slip of paper and place them in a bag. (Use the names provided on the Flower word search.)  Have each child stand on a 'flower' and start the music.  When the music stops, draw a flower name from the bag, whoever is standing on that flower, gets to select a small prize or candy, then rejoins the game.  This is a great game to play at the end of the party while you are waiting for parents to pick up their children.  Everyone participates, no one sits out, and everyone has an equal chance of winning each time.
